Student’s Photograph Selected as Finalist

Rachel L. had her photograph recently selected as a finalist for the 32nd Annual Photographers Forum College and High School Photo Contest, co-sponsered by Nikon. Her work will be published in a wonderful hardcover book and she remains in a group of finalists that have the opportunity to receive additional awards and prizes. Over 18,000 photographs were submitted. Congratulations to Rachel on this immense honor!

Poster Contest Student Participation

Eighth grade student Taylor P. created this poster for the American Association of Teachers of French National French Week 2011 Poster Contest. There were over 90 entries received at all levels from all over the country, and Taylor earned a certificate of participation. All of the entries, including Taylor’s, can be found HERE.

Student Offered Full Athletic Scholarship for UMES

Ashleigh Claybrooks has signed with the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) with a full athletic scholarship! Ashley has been part of MSA’s program for the past two years and has done a fine job. She earned All-Conference and All State Honors as a junior. Congratulations Ashley!

Senior Named In National Merit Scholarship Program

Congratulations to Max Johnson who has been named a Commended Student in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. Max will receive a Letter of Commendation from Miller School or Albemarle and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, and will be presented by Director of Academics, Elizabeth Brann.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

MSA Student Studies Abroad

MSA student Maggie Cumby is spending this school year in Rennes, Brittany, France through the SYA (School Year Abroad) program. SYA is an academic immersion program for students who want to study overseas.

For over 40 years, SYA has educating young adults to achieve mastery of a second language, gain familiarity with the beliefs and values of other cultures and learn the skills to become well equipped to meet the challenges of the global community.

Every day we see all kinds of things that others do differently from us. Sometimes, we are tempted to do or say the same thing, and we often find that it just didn’t work for us like it worked for that other person. Don Shula, who coached the Miami Dolphins through a “perfect” season, makes sense in his quote. Learning makes more sense for us when we take the time to understand and apply that new knowledge to what we already know or to our lives in a way that fits with us. You will always be you, and that’s what people like about you. Trying to be or act like someone else seldom succeeds. So, observe well; think; and, when it can work for you, do it in your own way.
