RICHMOND —

The Miller girls basketball team captured its second straight VISAA Division 3 state title Saturday afternoon with a 53-33 win over Williamsburg Christian Academy at Benedictine High School.

“The pressure is off for at least another year now,” Miller coach James Braxton said jokingly. “I’m very happy with our team, we progressed throughout the season and I’m definitely happy for our seniors as they got to go out with another state title.”

The run at a second consecutive state title came fairly easy for the Mavericks as they won their final 15 games, mostly in dominant fashion. Saturday’s victory was no different. They led from the get go and after hitting four 3-pointers in the first quarter, and jumped out to a 29-19 halftime lead.

“We jumped out quick and got ahead,” Braxton said. “We held the tempo to the game and they had a couple of good runs, but we ran our motion offense and took a lot of time off of the clock in the second half.”

Williamsburg Christian wouldn’t go quietly, however. They cut the Maverick lead to six with just under three minutes to play in the third quarter. That would be as close as the Eagles would get as Miller (25-4) put the game away en route to the 20 point win.

Miller’s seniors stepped up big in their final game as Mavericks. Ashley Bowles, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Mavericks with a game-high 16 points and hit four 3-pointers.

“Last year we struggled because we only had about five players,” Bowles said. “It was easier this year because we had more people to sub in and I could take charge when I needed to. This is an amazing feeling and I don’t want to leave this team even though I have to. Hopefully they can keep it going next season without me.”

Fellow senior Kelsey Corcoran chipped in with six points and five rebounds as she earned tournament MVP. Junior Ashley Claybrooks was also named to the all-tournament team after scoring 13 points and pulling down four rebounds.

Williamsburg Christian was led by sophomore Jalynn Ponzo, who scored a team-high nine points.
