Eighth Grade Student Earns Spot To Compete In National Geography Bee

In January the Miller School of Ablemarle 8th grade World Geography students all participated in the preliminary round of the National Geographic Bee sponsored by Google and Plum Creek.  Eight students emerged to the semifinals in front of the whole school.  Those students were Marta Regn, Nate Smith, Ian Kim, Eisen Huang, Lydie Holt, Brooke Henley, Andre Corscia, and Andy Mangham.  Emerging from a very difficult semi-finals round were third place winner, Brooke Henley, second place winner Nate Smith, and first place winner, and the 2011 Miller School Champion, Marta Regn.

Marta then completed an hour and a half written test in only an hour.  Her score sheet was then officially submitted to the state level where she was scored against all other school level champions across the state of Virginia that participated in the contest.  The Miller School of Ablemarle is pleased to announce that Marta Regn of Fluvanna County has earned a spot to compete in the National Geography Bee state level competition for the state of Virginia.

Marta will travel to Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia on Friday, April 1, 2011 in hopes of moving on to the national competition which will be held on May 24 and 25 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, DC.   Should she advance to the final round, featuring Alex Trebek, it will air on the National Geographic Channel on May 25 and then on public television stations, produced by National Geographic Television.

Ms. Regn joined us for eighth grade this fall from Fluvanna County.  Here at Miller she is a day student who was the only eighth grader to make the varsity volleyball team this fall, just about stole the show during her soliloquy as the Abbess at the end of the winter Shakespeare play, A Comedy of Errors, and has twice earned the highest grade point average for her grade so who knows . . . she just may go on to the national level!

Congratulations and good luck, Marta!
