Meghan Sweeny Awarded Golden Apple

Meghan Sweeny has been awarded The Golden Apple, awarded for excellence in Teaching in 2011!

Ms. Sweeny graduated in 2005 from a small Pennsylvania state school called California University. During her time there, she enthusiastically studied Chemistry and realized her strong passion for education. She was awarded the CETP (Collaborative Excellence in Teacher Preparation) scholarship that investigated the benefits of constructivism in a science and math classroom. Her unique student teaching experiences ranged from inner city to alternative environmental education. This helped her to prepare for her current position at the Miller School of Albemarle.

Currently, Ms. Sweeny teaches Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, and AP Environmental Science. In the chemistry classroom her objective is to build enthusiasm through real-life experiences and hands-on activities that help her students understand this challenging and fascinating subject. Her style in the Environmental classroom differs in that she considers herself more as a coach that inspires her students to discover and explore topics through student centered activities and projects.

Ms. Sweeny feels that the best part of the Miller School of Albemarle is the fact that the small class sizes allows for her to recognize and teach to the needs of each and every student.

Congratulations Ms. Sweeny, Miller is lucky to have you!

  1. Ms. Sweeny, Congratulations – you are a wonderful teacher/coach. It’s true – I see my son wanting to learn why things happen. Hesters
