Happy New Year of the Dragon!

新年快乐

chúc mừng năm mới

새해 복 많이 받으세요

MSA celebrated the 15 days of the Lunar New Year, or Asian Spring Festival beginning on January 23rd. It is traditional that on New Year ’s Eve a large feast is eaten, and so a group of students had a lovely (and yes large) meal at a local Chinese restaurant on Sunday the 22nd.

The next day presentations were made by both Chinese and Korean students and everyone figured out their Chinese zodiac signs and their many wonderful traits.  The highlight of the presentation, however, was the singing of a traditional holiday song by a group of our international students about the love of family and good times.

A fantastic lunch was served the first day of the New Year that featured both Chinese and Korean dishes, all incredibly delicious, and which was thoroughly enjoyed. Couplets – traditional posters placed around doors with auspicious wishes for the new year – went up on several doors to celebrate and bring good luck.

Please view the photos that were taken and the video made of the event on our website. (video) (photos)

The proper function of a man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.  ~ Jack London

Even the most positive-minded person sometimes feels like life is difficult.   When you feel like that, consider the following:

  1. Don’t panic – avoid losing your head, stay calm, and give yourself time to think.
  2. Don’t get overwhelmed – dramatizing how bad things are never helps you. Tell yourself that you can handle it.
  3. Practice de-confusion – make a list on paper of each piece of your situation. Know what you are facing, really.
  4. Don’t look back – deal with no; keep moving forward.
  5. Look for the small answers – avoid trying to solve your problem all at once. Think of the solution in steps.
  6. Practice creative listening – the quieter you are, the more likely you are to hear your own solutions.
  7. Do the right thing – in fact, you know what you have to do, so take the first step.
  8. Keep on thinking, believing, and working – what keeps you from solving your problem is the time you waste in worrying about it.
  9. Stay positive – if you don’t believe that you can create your own success, you won’t. Believe in yourself.
