Endurance Team Update

It has been a busy winter season for the Miller School of Albemarle Endurance Team, and now that spring has sprung, it is just going to become even busier! The team was training daily throughout the winter months, and due to mild weather was able to ride regularly with very few interruptions. Thanks in large part to a new trailer purchased in the fall (that is now outfitted to transport up to 17 bicycles!) the team now takes advantage of its new found mobility and travels off campus one day each week to frequent local cycling hot spots like Walnut Creek State Park and Mint Springs. A trip is already schedule for April where the team will get to experience the trails at Douthat State Park near Clifton Forge, VA. Douthat is renowned for having some of the best big mountain riding in the Eastern United States.

One of the most important events the Endurance Team has been preparing for just took place several days ago: the opening round of the VAHS MTB Series (www.VAHSMTB.com) that was hosted by the Miller School of Albemarle on March 20. Working closely with the Campus Trails service group, the Endurance Team helped construct almost two miles of brand new mountain bike trails that were utilized as part of the course and trained on them diligently.  Even coming off a two-week Spring Break, the Team had home “field” advantage going for it and squeaked out a win over rivals “Rocktown” from Harrisonburg! Some incredible results were had by Endurance Team riders, most notably Jake King and Taylor Clark who finished 2nd and 6th, respectively, in the hotly-contested Varsity race, and then Ben Scheiner and Sanders Evans had incredible rides to finish 1st and 2nd in the JV race!

Results for all Miller School of Albemarle Endurance Team members:

Varsity:

Jake King                    2nd

Taylor Clarke              6th

Rawls Fortenberry      9th

Brian Purdy                 10th

Sam Purcell                 12th

Kyle Ottaway             15th

JV:

Ben Scheiner               1st

Sanders Evans             2nd

Nate Smith                  4th

Niall Lovelace             5th

Andrew Li                  9th

More exciting news is that Jake King’s brother Ben has written and published an article about the team in Virginia Sportman Magazine, read the article here or visit their site here. And for more Endurance Team photos go to their page on Smug Mug here.
