MEAC Announces Women’s Basketball Honors

South Carolina State center Paris Alston was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Ashleigh Claybrooks earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Coppin State’s Leola Spotwood earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Alston (Center, 6-2, Sr., Greensboro, N.C.) averaged a double-double of 13.0 points and 12.5 rebounds in two victories last week. Against Clemson, Alston scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while shooting 6-of-11 from the floor (54-percent) and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe (85-percent). She also totaled three assists, three steals and three blocks in the wins.

Claybrooks (Forward, 6-3, Fr., Manassas, Va.) combined for 20 points, 11 rebounds and three steals to aid the Lady Hawks to a 1-1 record.  Against Mount St. Mary’s, Claybrooks was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Spotwood (Forward, 6-0, Sr., Trenton, N.J.) grabbed 31 rebounds, stole seven passes and blocked one shot in three games for the Lady Eagles. Offensively, she added 26 points and dished out six assists.

Keiara Avant (Hampton)
scored 22 points, nine rebounds and two steals in a conference win against Savannah State.

Alyssa Bennett (Hampton) tallied a double-double of 20 points and 12 points in a win over UMBC.

Tisha Dixon (NCCU) averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games for the Lady Eagles.

Rachel Gordon (NSU) scored 16 points and pulled down 18 rebounds in a loss to South Carolina State.

Jasmine Grice (FAMU) totaled 41 points, 16 rebounds and six steals in two games.

Mykala Jones (SCSU) averaged 11.5 points, while shooting 40-percent from the floor and 58-percent from 3-point range, in two Lady Bulldog victories. 

Ryan Jordan (Hampton) scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds against UMBC.

Tiara Knotts (SCSU) combined for 28 points, 10 rebounds and nine steals in two games.

Karona Roach (UMES)
totaled a career-high 20 points against Mount St. Mary’s.

Kimberly Sparkman (FAMU) scored 11 points, dished out two assists and stole one pass in a loss to Southeastern Louisiana.

Alexis Udoji (UMES) tallied a career-high six blocks in a victory over Towson.

Chasidy Williams (NCCU) posted a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Old Dominion.
